Introduction to Packaging Design

School:     Srishti Institute

Faculty:   Visual Communication Design

Level:   Under Graduate Students (2nd and 3rd year)

Year:       2018

A ten days workshop unit objective was to find out about different types of packaging through research and survey. Students were asked to visit the shops, local markets from Bangalore; to observe the types of products & their branding. Through these visits they have created a mood board for a new Food chain that sells South Indian snack/breakfast food items — Idli, Medu-Wada & Appams. They also studied demography, cultural context, tastes and habits of consumers. This process led in creating bilingual branding for the South Indian Snack food chain.  Scholars have explored various ways to interpret the visual language of the brand in packaging.  The concluding phase of the unit concentrated to look at the package design collectively. Students were expected to design packaging for a complete product range — South Indian Breakfast Items. The solutions required to be functional, cost effective and adaptable to mass production.
